CNOC2 Meeting, Germany - May 2007

Arrival & Munich

I flew in to Frankfurt from O'Hare and picked up one of the high-speed trains for the trip to Munich. I specifically requested a train so I could see the German countryside. I had never even been to Europe before, so I wanted to see what I could (especially since it had been almost completely cloudy after leaving the East Coast.

The hillsides were dotted with little villages, all looking rather similar, but still rather pretty and quaint.

The Munich Rathaus (town hall) in the middle of the Marienplatz (main plaza, as far as I can tell).

Closeup of the lovely old-Europe detailing.

Ah, the first of a great many places that were in the process of being remodeled. This is the Glockenspiel, which comes to life three times a day. We were rather late, though I wasn't entirely sure it was even working.

Um...it's a church...? I think...?

Most of the streets in the central part of the city were purely pedestrian, lined with imposing buildings and gentle curves.

The symbol of Munich: Frauenkirche (Cathedral of our Blessed Lady), the city's largest church.

The broad streets of the Marienplatz.

...along with some neat castle detailing between a couple buildings. I am happy to say that I never ate at any American places while there, though I am guilty of having German-made fries as a snack at one point (at a beergarden, so there).

Yeah, don't know what this is either. IT'S PRETTY.

Next:  Chiemsee
