Aug. 8, 2006 - This was the first--and best--picture of the evening. Not great, I know, but I had never
succeeded in getting pictures of lightning before, so I was happy. I heard later that there were reports
of ball lightning out of either this storm or one later in the week. Of course I didn't see it. *pout*
Aug. 8, 2006 - This is what I call the Brownian Motion stroke. Not sure what the electric fields were
doing.... Maybe they're drunk. Ha ha.
Aug. 25, 2006 - As soon as I heard thunder, I checked doppler radar and saw a nice cell moving south
of my apartment. Since my balcony faces south, I grabbed my camera and tripod and frantically set them up.
My first picture usually ends up being merely a blank that I use to see what's in the field of view; this
time, however, it became my best lightning picture of the evening.
Aug. 25, 2006 - Oddly enough, as the storms moved on, all the lightning I was seeing was horizontal.
Seemed weird to me, but I won't complain--still got some decent pictures from them....
July 10, 2007 - Several cells popped up on the eastern side of the city, and as those blew up (and died),
more kept popping farther and farther west. Soon a cell had appeared just southeast of me. Not sure why
this particular group had that blue tint. (Note: this picture has been cropped.)
July 10, 2007 - I had no more given up on the storm(s) than another popped up directly south and began
heading straight for me. I had barely taken the camera back outside and pressed the button when BANG!
I didn't even see these bolts. I just opened the shutter and ran inside to type a quick message to
someone. When I went running back to the balcony, I heard a loud series of thunderings and wondered if
I got the bolt that caused it. I'd say that was a yes.
August 15, 2007 - This night seemed perfect for lightning pictures; however, I encountered a problem I
never had before: lightning that was too bright! Three of the five bolts I caught saturated the CCD,
resulting in a bright white splotch instead of a clear bolt. This was one of the two bolts that
photographed "normally," though both were nearly off the frame. (This photo has been cropped.)
August 25, 2007 - Amazing lightning show to the north! I drug the tripod/camera and umbrella out to the
northwest side of the parking lot and started snapping pictures.
My favorite of that night's photography.
Not as pretty as the others, but still a nice bolt.
There were some fantastic displays, though I missed a decent number of them due to the bane of my
lightning photography existence: readout time! My apologies for the light and power lines. I need to find
higher ground for my lightning pictures.
As the storm moved off, most of the lightning became distant cloud-to-ground strikes or fingers of
cloud-to-cloud. These are two separate strikes. (This picture has been cropped.)
September 15, 2007 - A long-lived monsoon season continued to bring moisture through the area. This was
the only good bolt I got out of two nights of photos, but it's not bad. The colors are neat, anyway. (It
wasn't quite dark yet.) (Cropped.)
