Herping, Round Three
May 16, 2009

First thing we saw was a Royal Horned Lizard scurrying across the road. They're diurnal, so I don't know what he was doing out a dusk.

What a cutie!

An adult sidewinder!

Sidewinders only get about two feet long! I think this, along with their tiny rattles, makes them utterly adorable.

We chased him off the road and let him go on his merry way.

The first Western Banded Gecko of the night (a big male).

Finally, a snake we could handle--a Desert Night Snake.

Off he goes....

Biiiiiiig scorpion.

This spider was huge, too, though it was smaller than the scorpion. I included my hand for a size comparison.

Western Banded Gecko number two (also a male).

These guys remind me of leopard geckos, though I think they're only distantly related.

Another cutie! The shy Spotted Leaf-Nosed Snake.

The upturned scale on their noses help them dig into lizard burrows to eat the eggs. They are exclusively egg-eaters.

Western Banded Gecko number three (a female, this time).

On our way out, we found a Couch's Spadefoot Toad.
